It is possible that he was married to more than one woman at a time. circa 1900.1 He married Alice Helen Surrier on 20 December 1900 at Holland, Minnesota, United States.1 My Search for Daniel:

Philip's father, Ernie Clyde, never knew anything about his father, Daniel Renfro Walker. Throughout the years it was discussed and we were always curious about what had happened to him. Clyde's wife, Magenta, had written up some genealogical information about her own family and Clyde's mother's family. However, all she had about Daniel was the following:

COPIED FROM OLD MISSOURI NEWSPAPERS: (from Magenta's scrapbook)

Rev. D. R. Walker the evangelist, and Miss Annie Richardson of Winona, MO. Were married at the residence of Judge Plummer, in Birch Tree, MO, last Saturday afternoon. Mr. Walker needs no introduction from the RECORD. Miss Richardson has been one of the prominent school teachers of the county at present being assistant at the Fishertown school, and is a highly respected young lady wherever she is known. She will continue teaching for the present.

Rev. D.R. Walker of Duouoin, Ill. was a Methodist Episcopal minister who became famous as an evangelist throughout the Central States region in the 1890s. He has headlined as one of Missouri's greatest Evangelists but traveled through many states and the Indian Territory establishing churches and converting as many as 300 in one or two meetings. He was known from Texas and Florida to Illinois as an outstanding evangelist.

In addition to this, we had what appeared to be a wedding photo of Annie and Daniel.

On the back was a photographer's name in Winona, MO. I was also able to obtain the marriage certificate and saw a copy of the original at the Family History Center.

I posted many messages on internet ''Walker'' boards, joined the mail lists, and checked all census information but was never able to find anymore. Not knowing Daniel's birth date complicated the issue of finding him in census information.

One day, while looking at MO sites, I came across the State Historical Society and discovered that there were microfilms of old newspapers, among which was The Record, the same paper that published the above account of the marriage. l thought that perhaps there might be some personal items from the early months of their marriage. I eagerly awaited it's arrival at our local library and because it was unindexed, I started at the beginning. I suddenly realized that the first issue was January 1899, after Clyde was born and living in Arkansas. I had confused the dates when ordering it. Daniel wouldn't be living there anymore. I read a few of the first papers just for fun to see what was happening in MO in 1899. l then pushed the button to advance the reel quite a ways and let go. l turned one more page and there it was: ''A CLERICAL FRAUD'' I knew immediately what was going to follows! What a discovery after all those years of knowing nothing. There he was. I grabbed my phone and called Phil. We've found him l screamed, ''and he's a “FRAUD'' What excitement!

THE RECORD.
BIRCH TREE, SHANNON COUNTY, MISSOURI,
FRIDAY JUNE 23, 1899

A CLERICAL FRAUD

Walker, ''the evangelistic Who Held a Meeting Here Two Years Ago, Exposed.

D. R. Walker, the ''evangelist'' who held a meeting in Birch Tree two years ago this summer, has been stripped of his sanctimonious garb, and his claims to holiness have gone glimmering. While he was holding his meeting here there were persistent rumors that he was not what he professed to be. He had a short while before held a meeting in Winona, and numerous converts attested his fetching manner of explaining the plan of salvation. His meeting at Birch Tree was also considered successful and shortly after he married Miss Annie Richardson, at that time a teacher in the public school at Fisherstown, who shocked her friends by joining her fortunes with a man of unknown past. After his successful efforts at Birch Tree and Winona, Walker even had nerve enough to tackle Eminence - but that is another story.

When he left Shannon county he went to Arkansas, and stories floated back that he had been married previously to coming to Missouri, though he strenuously denied the story when here, claiming all the stories derogatory to him were the inventions of enemies, members of rival churches. Anyhow, nothing definite was known concerning him until the past few weeks, when the ''clerical scamp'' turned up at Salem. He went to that town last February while a revival was being held at the Baptist church and as they had no pastor, Walker went in with all his might to help do the preaching. He told the people that his wife (nee Annie Richardson) had died a few weeks before and he was devoting his time and talent to the service of his Master. As a letter from Salem says ''some of the people were ready to worship him” while others were not so sure of his sincerity and were plain in saying so. As was the case while here, he had some kind of ''bad spells'' from which he nearly died (?), so the good people of Salem made up money and sent him to St. Louis for treatment. He stayed there as long as his funds lasted and then sent for more, but some of his dupes began to suspect him and refused to respond. He went back to Salem and began preaching for the Baptists, and before the meeting was over, he was converted to that faith and joined that church. He was baptized in the baptistery in the church, but had previously made arrangements with a photographer to be on the scene to take his picture while in the act of being baptized, to the horror and disgust of the better class of Christian people of Salem.

Additions to the church followed his preaching and eight went to the creek near by for ''brother Walker'' to baptize them. His love for the spectacular, and the desire to exploit Walker, as was shown at Winona, asserted itself , and unknown to the candidates he had two photographers concealed to take their pictures, keeping them in the water for that purpose about fifteen minutes. The ''baptizing'' was described by one who was present as a ''perfect burlesquely When preaching one night, he told the people what a mighty work he had done for the Lord while at Birch Tree. He claimed to have brought to life and built up the Methodist church and said he had also converted all the Christian church and had them join the Methodist church. He so imposed on the Baptist church that they elected him pastor at Salem. But his past life began to follow him and last Thursday the town was much wrought up all day concerning him and so the ''evangelist'' finding it getting hot for him left town Friday, telling some he was going to Winona to straighten things up. He had not at this writing showed up in our sister town--and he had better not. And so another wolf in sheep's clothing has been exposed. Beware of tramp lecturers and evangelists.

After reading this, I immediately went back to the MO. website to see if there were microfilms of any Salem, MO paper. Yes, l was in luck. This time I ordered the issues beginning with January, 1899 as The Record mentioned that he arrived there in February, 1899.

On the following page are the dates and items that appeared in the personals.

On the next page I've copied the report on the local church trial. That was the last item to appear.

Items reported in THE SALEM MONITOR.
Salem, Dent County, Missouri.

Feb. 7. 1899 Daniel Walker was baptized at the Baptist church Tues. afternoon.

Mar. 16. 1899 Rev. Walker will preach at the Baptist Church next Sunday morning and evening,

April 13. 1899 Rev. Walker was elected pastor of the Baptist Church Sunday.

Rev. Walker will preach at the Baptist Church Sunday morning and evening.

Rev. Walker will leave Monday for Mammoth Springs, Ark. to spend a few days. He'Il probably return Friday.

May 4. 1899 Rev. Walker left Monday for a visit to relatives and friends in Illinois and Kentucky.

Quite a large crowd witnessed the baptizing at the ford of the creek near the Seay farm Sunday afternoon. There were eight applicants and Rev. Walker performed the ceremony.

May 18. 1899 On account of sickness, Rev. Walker will not be able to fill his appointment next Sunday and Sunday night.

June 22. 1899 A report was circulated that Rev. Walker stole something like $30.00 from Mrs. Lizzie Kenamore, just before he left. Mrs. Kenamore wishes to state that this report is false as she has lost no money.

October 5. 1899 On the 10th of Sept. 1899 the members of the Baptist Church of Salem met in conference to try the case of Rev. D. R. Walker. On report of committee, it was found that he was not guilty of such charges as that of bigamy. The church exonerated and restored him to full fellowship.

THE SALEM MONITOR
SALEM, DENT COUNTY, MISSOURI, THURSDAY, OCTOBER 19, 1899

Walker Exonerated

A statement in regard to the church trial of D. R. Walker of September 10, 1899. The committee of investigation reported that D. R. Walker was married to Kate Mcphail at Prosperity, Ill, in 1891 and lived with her until April, 1897. they separated in Texas', he coming to Missouri in Oct. 1897 and married Anna Richardson, of Birch Tree Mo., \ with whom he lived until Sept, 1898, when they separated in Arkansas, he, coming to Missouri again.
His first wife was divorced from him in June last. Charges also that he was guilty of practicing deceit, hypocrisy and falsehood in the pulpit according to the Baptist rules and usages, could only charge him with his conduct since his membership and he plead guilty to the three last named charges and asked the forgiveness of the church, which the church gave without a dissenting voice. This restored him to full fellowship.

The above facts, the minutes of the conference of Sept., 10, 1899. shows.
l make the above statement in justice to D. R. walker and also the church.
Walker was reported as having four living wives and the church was censured for her actions in not expelling Walker from the ministry for Bigamy. I hope this will help settle the matter.
W. T. Martin,
Church Clerk

This account gave me the rest of the story. l was then able to contact people in Franklin Co. Ill who sent me all the Walker/Mcphail marriage and divorce information. That included Daniel's birthplace which led me to the Clayborne Co. TN website where I found the Pioneer Project and much more information on the rest of the family and your name and email address.
Meanwhile, l had entered ''Renfro'' at Ancestry.com and come up with a pedigree chart on his THIRD family! I was really amazed by then - actually more amazed that he had stayed with this wife for all those birthsl in 2000.1
